Quantity (kg) = wall area (sq ft) × coats ÷ coverage (60 sq ft/kg for whitewash, 80 for distemper). Bags = kg ÷ 25.

How to use the Whitewash & Distemper Quantity Calculator

Whitewash (chuna) is still the cheapest way to freshen boundary walls, farm buildings and rental houses, but it is bought by the kilo while walls are measured in square feet. This whitewash quantity calculator per square foot bridges that gap: one kilo of slaked lime covers about 60 sq ft per coat, distemper about 80. Enter the wall area and number of coats and you get the kilos — and the 25 kg bags — to buy, so the whitewasher never runs dry halfway along the wall.

  1. Measure the wall area in square feet and enter it in the Wall area field.
  2. Select the number of coats — 2 coats give a proper finish on old walls.
  3. Select the material: whitewash (chuna) or distemper.
  4. Click Calculate to see kilograms and 25 kg bags required.

Formula

Quantity (kg) = wall area (sq ft) × coats ÷ coverage (60 sq ft/kg for whitewash, 80 for distemper). Bags = kg ÷ 25.

Worked example

Whitewashing 1,000 sq ft of boundary wall with 2 coats of chuna: 1,000 × 2 ÷ 60 = 33.3 kg. That is 1.33 bags, so buy 2 bags of 25 kg — the leftover keeps for touch-ups. Mix the chuna a day ahead so it slakes fully, and the two coats will cover evenly without patchy white spots.

Frequently asked questions

About 1.7 kg per coat (100 ÷ 60). Two coats need roughly 3.3 kg.

Whitewash is slaked lime (chuna) — cheapest, best for exterior and farm buildings. Distemper is a water-based paint with better finish for interiors.

Two coats over a clean surface; three if the old surface is dark or patchy.
