Cement & Sand for Brickwork

Work out how much cement and sand for 1000 bricks your masonry work will consume. Use the free Cement & Sand for Brickwork below — enter your values and get instant results, right in your browser. Dry mortar = 0.30 m³ per 1000 bricks. Cement (m³) = 0.30 × 1/(1+ratio); bags = cement m³ × 1440 ÷ 50. Sand (cu ft) = 0.30 × ratio/(1+ratio) × 35.31.

How to use the Cement & Sand for Brickwork

Bricks are only half the masonry story — every thousand bricks needs mortar, and running out of cement mid-course means a cold joint and a weak wall. This calculator uses the standard rule that 1000 bricks consume about 0.30 cubic metres of dry mortar, then splits it between cement and sand according to your chosen 1:4 or 1:6 ratio. Whether you are building a room or a full boundary wall, enter any brick count and get the cement bags and sand volume to buy in a single market trip.

  1. Enter the total number of bricks for your masonry work in the Number of bricks field.
  2. Select the mortar ratio — 1:6 for standard work or 1:4 for stronger, load-bearing masonry.
  3. Click Calculate to see cement bags and sand cubic feet.
  4. Buy the cement in 50 kg bags as shown; sand is measured in cubic feet at the dealer.

Formula

Dry mortar = 0.30 m³ per 1000 bricks. Cement (m³) = 0.30 × 1/(1+ratio); bags = cement m³ × 1440 ÷ 50. Sand (cu ft) = 0.30 × ratio/(1+ratio) × 35.31.

Worked example

For 5,000 bricks with 1:6 mortar: dry mortar = 1.5 m³, cement = 1.5 × 1/7 = 0.214 m³, which is 0.214 × 28.8 = 6.17 bags — buy 7 bags. Sand = 1.5 × 6/7 × 35.31 = 45.4 cubic feet.

Frequently asked questions

About 1.24 bags of 50 kg cement with standard 1:6 mortar, plus roughly 9 cubic feet of sand.

Use 1:6 for ordinary walls and 1:4 for load-bearing walls, foundations and damp areas where extra strength is needed.

The 0.30 m³ dry-mortar figure already includes normal site wastage. Add a little extra only if the brick sizes are very irregular.
