Silage Requirement Calculator

How much silage per cow per day? Plan silage stocks for your whole herd. Use the free Silage Requirement Calculator below — enter your values and get instant results, right in your browser. Daily silage (kg) = animals × kg per animal per day. Monthly (tonnes) = daily × 30 ÷ 1000. Add 10% for face spoilage.

How to use the Silage Requirement Calculator

Silage pits are filled once a season, so the quantity has to last until the next crop — running out in March means buying expensive fodder at peak prices. A milking cow eats roughly 20–30 kg of silage a day depending on size and yield. This silage requirement calculator multiplies your herd size by the daily rate to give kilos per day and tonnes per month, the two numbers that size the pit and the purchase. Plan the stock before the maize harvest, not after.

  1. Enter the number of animals that will eat silage.
  2. Enter the silage per animal per day in kg (25 is typical for milking cows).
  3. Click Calculate to see daily kilos and monthly tonnes.
  4. Multiply the monthly figure by feeding months to size the silage pit.

Formula

Daily silage (kg) = animals × kg per animal per day. Monthly (tonnes) = daily × 30 ÷ 1000. Add 10% for face spoilage.

Worked example

Five cows at 25 kg each: 125 kg per day = 3.75 tonnes per month. For 4 months of feeding you need 15 tonnes in the pit — plus 10% spoilage allowance, about 16.5 tonnes. Compact each layer with the tractor as you fill the pit, because trapped air is what spoils silage.

Frequently asked questions

About 20–30 kg daily for a milking cow, adjusted for body size, milk yield and other feeds in the ration.

Well-compacted, airtight silage keeps 12 months or more; spoilage happens at the open face, so feed across the full face evenly.

Yes for the dry season — good maize silage replaces green fodder kilo for kilo in the ration.
