Class Test Average Calculator

A class test average calculator for teachers — average up to five test scores in one click. Use the free Class Test Average Calculator below — enter your values and get instant results, right in your browser. Average = (Test 1 + Test 2 + Test 3 + Test 4 + Test 5) ÷ Number of tests taken. Only taken tests are counted in the divisor, so untaken tests entered as 0 do not lower the average.

How to use the Class Test Average Calculator

Teachers tracking weekly class tests need quick averages for report cards and parent meetings, but phone calculators make it tedious across a whole class. This class test average calculator for teachers averages up to five test scores per student: enter the marks, set how many tests were actually taken, and get the average and total instantly — then move to the next student.

  1. Enter the student's marks for each test in the Test 1–5 fields (leave future tests at 0).
  2. Set Number of tests taken to the count of tests that actually happened.
  3. Click Calculate to see the average score and the total.
  4. Repeat for the next student — the fields keep your last entries for quick editing.

Formula

Average = (Test 1 + Test 2 + Test 3 + Test 4 + Test 5) ÷ Number of tests taken. Only taken tests are counted in the divisor, so untaken tests entered as 0 do not lower the average.

Worked example

A student scores 18, 15, and 20 in three tests of 20 marks: average = (18 + 15 + 20 + 0 + 0) ÷ 3 = 17.67. As a percentage of 20 marks that is 88.3% — useful for the term report.

Frequently asked questions

Convert each test to a percentage first (marks ÷ total × 100), then average the percentages. Averaging raw marks of different totals would be unfair.

School policy decides: many schools mark absent as zero, others exclude the test from that student's average. Set tests taken accordingly for the excluded case.

For more tests, average in two batches: average the first five, note the total, then combine. Or keep a running total on paper and divide once at the end.
